I find the process of putting a defensive line up around a city fiddly and time consuming - It's tactically sound, probably compulsory, but the physical doing it isn't a fun part of the game for me, it's an irritation. Proposal; When you click on a city you have the option to select units as though you were moving them but there is a little button (like the air/sea transport button) that allows you to assign them to city wall. Any unit attacking the city from the land hits the wall units. Any hitting from the sea hits the naval units. Seems to be a relatively simple programming task task using existing mechanisms which will allow players to focus on the fun parts of the game. There could even be a default a player could set; X militia or X infantry or whatever. Obviously external units could still make walls as now, and hopefully they'd link up with City walls.

I don't think the devs would add this purely because if you can do it, then do it. It's part of your time management. Do you want to spend your time being defensive, making walls, or offensive, attacking your enemy.

Its way too complicated, it would be impossible to the computer to wall if there were any enemy nearby your city.

We're not going to do it automatically for already mentioned reasons. It's not easy to write a proper script for this, and it's really supposed to be something you do yourself.
