In both map editor and wiki, I see the term "extra city". I'm assuming it means a city that exists and produces income but isn't on the map. Am I right?

Not really, no When starting any game on a map, in the advance options there is an box saying "Extra cities" that is turned off by default but can be turned on. When if it's turned on, all the cities that were deemed as "extra cities" in that map's map editor are 'added to the map and become playable' otherwise they are hidden and the game threats them like they don't exist; no income produced, no reinforcements, nothing. For example in default world map Skopje is set as an extra city, meaning that in games where extra cities are turned off you won't be seeing and interacting with the city. In fact since it's a capital city too, you cannot even conquer Macedonia. But if the host opens the extra cities Skopje will be present in the game.

Alright, I'll call it FYROM for ya xD But nevertheless I think it's strategic location is pretty important. When extra cities are open Skopje is one of the cities I prioritize the defense of after Belgrade since it's right in the middle of all important cities in the region like Belgrade, Bucharest, Sophia, Athens and Istanbul
