ATN Survey

A few weeks ago we created a survey about Translations. Looking at the bright side of our community about 81% of you translate AW.



Why did they translate AW?



As you can see the majority of AW believe they translate to make life easier for non-English users. However around 38% of our population do it for Protocoins and out of plain boredom.
Swiftly moving on, 67% of you actually use the translations. Furthermore 30% of you don't, which leaves the small minority 3% of you that don't even know where or how to find these translations!



Looking at whether you found the translations useful, many of you felt comfortable playing AW in your own language even though you know English. In fact, only 8% of you used the translations because of language difficulties and 6% said some of the words were wrongly translated.

Finally, I asked many of you this question:

Do you think this translating process opens the door for a better community? If so, please explain. I got some good replies and want to share them out with you all. Will be anonymous of course.


#1 Anonymous: I think this game -must- be available in many languages, because it will help the community grow larger. and of course would be helpful to non-English speakers or mainly those who don't speak it fluently. but communicating between AtWar community members should of course be in English, as for me I don't need to use this feature because I speak English fluently and would prefer to use it over my native language.

#2 Anonymous: translating the game will not change the way the community will be. it will only help to remove the language barrier of the new and old players of the game, and will keep the game growing rather then having it decreasing because of frustrated players that dont understand a thing in english and cant use the tutorials to get better at the game or advices from common members. and i think the admins did great job when starting the operation to translate the game, it will benefit all the surrounding

#3 Anonymous: Not necessarily a "better" community but a BIGGER community. Among the new-comers there may be some future active players, rather than "simple" followers of the current. What this community differentiates from other communities - I have said it before to Abfahren, but he didn't care - is a bunch of 50-100 players that are really active in developing the community as a COMMUNITY. Designing tournaments, maps, scenarios, units... bug-reporting, pod-cast, ideas, development, AW-News, etc.
THIS makes a BETTER community...

#4 Anonymous: In my case (translating Dutch) the translation will not help much to recruit more players. Dutch gamers are mostly young people and young Dutch people speak English. I'm pretty sure that the most of the Dutch games have all their games and application installed in the 'English' language anyway (at least i did). But still, that 0-10% that does use Dutch, it can be usefull. And also if you are english and you want to learn Dutch, you can use it .
And last but not least i think its very usefull for players from other countries (like Turkey) where people speak less English. It will bring them to the game too. Although i also think that there should be a special chat room for them too.

#5 Anonymous: Yes it does open the door for better community, but without Mods to support and ''enforce the rules'' and do their job overall, translated AW wont make that influence as we all expect.

#6 Anonymous: I hope this will bring more people to atWar. at least a translated webpage brings a lot of benefits according to SEO -> more people wil find atWar though Google, Yahoo, Bing. But I think its also nice to have the game in the native language, because if i think of the 13-years old me, then i am sure that i would have never started a game with an english interface, because i was not capable of the language (i am still a noob). So I think this also keeps young kids in the game.

Me: I would rather be deaf, having some deaf friends its actually relatively easy to communicate. Plus being blind I would find it hard to be a gamer or appreciate hot women without the risk of rape charges!

Me: From the game Stalins vs Martians, which funnily I have NEVER played, I was going to call the clan Martians vs Goblins after a rap track, but this name seemed better.

Stuff that never made the post.


First things first, you've all pretty much heard about the AW radio that Tesla created. He hosted the radio tonight too, and luckily we got round to interview him

[pr] Terminal: tesla: Hey tesla! So I want to talk to you about the AW radio. You down for it?

[pr] Terminal: tesla: So can you tell me how you came about with the marvelous radio idea? :O
[pr] tesla: Radio idea.. I like listening musics, and I also make some shows in my school etc. So then one day I was thinking, Why doesn't AW have a radio like other online games. Then I created it.
[pr] tesla: And with this idea I would have a chance to know other music kinds and cultures.
[pr] Terminal: tesla: What types of music do you mainly listen to now?
[pr] tesla: I usually listen rap music. But I listen musics if it comes cool when I hear it.
[pr] tesla: That was the my main point. I really wanted to learn different kind of music cultures.
[pr] tesla: When players request a song, I'm checking it and then I play it.. I really enjoying this job.
[pr] Terminal: tesla: Sounds pretty awesome. Can you share with me your future plans for the radio station? like maybe integrating it into AW itself
[pr] tesla: Yes, we already talked with Amok about this idea. And he gave us a cool response. atWar radio may implemented into the game. But firstly we need more listeners.

Here I am. The first 50 threads of AW!


1. Doesn't exist. Probably a test thread.
2. 'Bug report': The precursor to the bugs forum. Promonex, codetornado, and a younger Guest14502 report a lot of bugs. Ivan wonders why Guest14 never got a username, and Guest14 says he can fool people into thinking he's a noob, and that the 14502 became recognisable.
3. Doesn't exist.
4. Doesn't exist.
5. 'Ideas and suggestions': the precursor to the ideas forum.
6. 'Questions': a player made precursor to the questions forum. Kudos to Zombie from Egypt for creating the questions forum.
7. Doesn't exist.
8. 'Unit Stats w/ upgrades': A compilation of unit stats, the precursor to the units FAQ. Kudos to cdb for inspiring the units FAQ.
9. Redirects to 'Dev Blog: Ideas For The Future': The first news blog created after Afterwind's public launch. Contains ideas for 'missions', the capture _ country for _ turns victory condition, research, rare units, casual games, and private games.
10. 'RESOLVED: Can't use backspace in chat': The first bug topic, a bug where you couldn't use backspace in chat.
11. 'Joining a Game': The first idea topic, an idea that would try to prevent idiots from getting SP by playing alone. Was then necroed a year later by PANTHA_1, not the first PANTHA necro.
12. 'VCR': A nice idea about saving a game's history so one could play it back later.
13. 'Score Board': The first question topic, where a blind guy asked for a score board, ignoring the already implemented player list by SP.
14. 'Ideas': A list of ideas. Among them are new game modes, the ability to change bombers into infantry to capture cities, allowing you to build troops in foreign countries, city stealth detection, landscape 'modificators', and strange special abilities.
15. 'Ideas by john': Thank you john. Ideas for transport escorting, aircraft carriers, and anti-tank units, along with a bug.
16. 'Version 0.87 Release Notes': News post, implementing interface adjustments, cash transfer, stealth bomber nerfs, increased income in dirt poor countries, latejoining nerfs, and the ability to buy units out of recently captured cities.
17. 'Problems with trolls': I love this topic. Highlights the beginning of Afterwind trolling. Contains the first ideas displayed on the forum for the ignore function, the inability to kick active players, the English only rule (which didn't get much support), and more people with admin powers. Essentially moderators. Kudos to you, Promonex.
18. 'Version 0.88 Release Notes': News post, implementing most of the above ideas. Version 0.875 Release Notes was skipped for some reason.
19. 'RESOLVED: Turn duration after game start': sificvoid reports the exploit where game owner could change turn timer in the middle of a game.
20. 'Afterwind: the Facebook app testing': Afterwind is introduced to Facebook. People report bugs.
21. 'Poland and Turkey': A Polish bloke lists reasons why Poland should be stronger and why Turkey is incredibly OP. Ivan responds with removing a Turkish city, adding 2 Polish cities, refusing to change income (as it's all based on GDP data) and forgetting that some countries start with infantry.
22. 'RESOLVED: Forgot password': Someone forgot their password. It was resolved.
23. 'Messenger / friends / channels': A Dutch suggests the inclusion of a system where one can send messages to offline friends (?) and the addition of new channels for other languages.
24. 'Clan wars': A strange idea for a separate clan war game. 'Twas never implemented.
25. 'Kick a player': Someone asked if you could kick players. Amok responded by saying that you can.
26. 'Peace/War': Someone complains about the peace treaty mechanic.
27. 'Battles outside cities / intercepting units': A list of ideas for prioritisation of moves. Was too complicated to implement.
28. 'Version 0.9 Release Notes': Implementation of 100+ cities, rejoining as an option, capture x country to win, ally chat, flood control (cuz spammers), and an increase of attack/defence of all units by one.
29. 'Who goes 'first'?': A question about turn prioritisation and turnblocking, before the term existed.
30. Doesn't exist.
31. 'Version 0.91 Release Notes': Implementation of tiny unit icons, militia spawning in captured cities, disallowing bombers to take cities, new upgrades (including the 'lucky' upgrades), victory adjustments, rank adjustments, reinforcement adjustments (max reinfs now 7), transport adjustments, and unlockable Lucky Bastard. I love how LB was the most expensive upgrade at the time, at 40k SP.
32. 'New army icons on the map': The first feedback poll asking what people thought of the new icons for units, instead of circles. It ended with the admins mashing together circles and tiny icons, as they are now.
33. 'Unsportsmanship tactic': Crazy Ivan complains about players starting games with just themselves.
34. 'Starting/Joining a Clan': Someone hears about the upcoming clan update and announces intention to join one. He soon starts a discussion about clans.
35. 'Upgrades': The first compilation of upgrades. Was soon rendered outdated.
36. 'RESOLVED: Cant move me': Alessandro Zambonin ambiguously complains about not being able to move units.
37. 'A Global Unit creator': Basically a suggestion for the auto-builder. Apparently auto-building existed when reinforcements were every week, but was switched off when it became every month.
38. 'Attacking (air) transports': Back when units inside air transports weren't counted even on land, people complained. No response.
39. 'Donations?': Guest14502 wants to donate 5 dollars, so Ivan sets up a PayPal. Gardevoir donates 20 bucks.
40. Doesn't exist.
41. 'What should be the next thing we work on?': Feedback poll. In order of popularity, choices were more upgrades, population casualties (FINALLY HERE), clans, saving games, stealth detection, and password protected games.
42. 'Two Ideas: Disbanding and Revolting': Guest14502 presents the idea of disbanding units and units revolting after going into debt. The former idea received overwhelming support. No response. Necroed by Gking and LilD.
43. 'Two Ideas -- Random Start and All Units': Ideas for a mode where your country is decided at random, and a mode where all unlockable units were unlocked. No response.
44. 'Versions 0.915-0.917 (City income)': City income tweaks, along with the introduction of the /pr function.
45. 'Turtling The new way to play': People complain about patch 0.915. Version 0.917 is introduced in response.
46. 'Are the game and its interface/controls easy to figure out?': Feedback poll. Self-explanatory.
47. 'Stealth Carrier(s)': Idea for a stealth carrier. Earliest thread that, to this date, has no reply. Poor TP_MLD.
48. 'Rules changes as advanced game (creation) options': TP_MLD wants more game creation options. Ivan says he likes simplicity.
49. 'Reddit Post!': Someone who came from Reddit shares the AW Reddit page. People post en masse saying they're from Reddit.
50. 'I can make a trailer/tutorial': Muncher wants to help the admins improve the tutorial. Ivan responds with appreciation. Not sure if this fellow ever actually helped out.



Mathdino announced that Amok would be the "Ask me" player a few months back. Never got round posting it, so here we go:

Me: AW is already taking most of our resources, so probably not. Definitely nothing large-scale.

iom2015: If the world ends tomorrow, what is the last meal you would love to eat before the world ends?
Me: Sea cucumber, just because I'll have nothing to lose and there's no way in hell I'll be eating that any other day.

Me: I'm not a football fan, so they're literally all the same to me.

blargh: When will AW make my breakfast every mourning?
Me: We're actually planning to release that in one of the next updates. And then shortly after the custom breakfast presets.

Me: It's not quite the same, playing the game that you've made yourself. Also, we did actually play a month ago when we were recording a trailer video. We were thinking about making it some kind of a regular event where we'll play as well.

Me: Whenever you want. You realise that I'm going to win all your Elo points? At least I'm hoping to. I've got a chance, right? Oh well.../godmode, /noclip

Me: Not really. I've only got like 5 or 6 sport cars in my garage...and a leaky yacht.

Me: I'm not the best person to ask, really.

Acquiesce: When did you decide to be a programmer?
Me: I was always naturally interested in creating stuff. I think I was around 10 when I wrote my first piece of code...it was after I got bored of all the stuff on my PC (having no internets helped a lot, too).

AlexMeza: Why did you decide to make Afterwind?
Me: Together with Ivan, we wanted to create the ultimate strategy game, something that would combine the dynamics and simplicity of Risk with diplomacy and deep planning of Civ. And there was nothing like that at the time (there still isn't, apart from atWar, or course)

Me: Yes, for example, we were always fighting over who got to use the only PC at home...life was quite harsh until we've got another one.
